What the Bleep Do We Know! - William Tiller - Part 2
As promised in my previous entry, I am now moving to Tiller's ""Conscious Acts of Creation and Human Transformation". In fact, this book has already been discussed on the Web. Here is an extract from what I found using Goggle:

Recently I was prompted to study the book Conscious Acts of Creation: The emergence of new physics by William A. Tiller, PhD, Walter E. Dibble, Jr., PhD, and Michael J. Kochane, Ph. D. The Preface to the book is signed by Rustum Roy, Penn State, Wayne B. Jonas, USUHS and .... E.C. George Sudarshan, University of Texas, Austin.
Are we ready to be bitten by monopoles? Here is a quotation:
"Through the agency of a nine-dimensional coupling substance in the vacuum, called deltrons, the faster than light magnetic monopoles functioning in reciprocal space can interact with electric monopole substance functioning in direct space of physical matter. The vacuum phase transition mentioned above involves an ordered phase formation of magnetic monopole substance phase of R-space. These magnetic monopoles of R-space travel so fast that they 'write the waves,' thought to be de Broglie pilot waves, controlling the movement of particles in D-space. A symmetry principle, called the mirror principle is thought to operate between D-space substances and R- space substances so that the monopole charge singularities in one space produce dipole images through the mirror into the other space. Likewise, the monopole mass singularities in one space produce images through this mirror into the other space. Thus the negative negative monopole mass singularities of R-space are thought to be the origin of the 'dark matter' we currently detect with our instruments in D-space.(...)"
If you think that these concepts are explained somewhere in the book - you may be surprised to find out that after you are through with the book, you will not have an idea of what the "theoretical part" is about.
Now, let me mention that I wrote papers on magnetic monopoles and on "reciprocity" (including conformal symmetric spaces). Therefore, I suggest, that after we are done with KMS, signature fluctuactions, and topological field theory, there is a new field to be exploited in the space of hoaxes: D-spaces and R-spaces and monopoles that write the waves, thought to be de Broglie pilot waves.... All supported by PhDs.

Conscious Acts of Creation is being madly promoted by the "alternative crowd" as "proof" that all their "you create your own reality" ideas are true. Conscious Acts of Creation, tells us:
This book marks a sharp dividing line between old ways of scientific thought and old experimental protocols, wherein human qualities of consciousness, intention, emotion, mind and spirit cannot significantly affect physical reality, and a new paradigm wherein they can robustly do so! …utilizing a unique experimental protocla on both inanimate and animate systems, that the human quality of focused intention can be made to act as a true thermodynamic potential and strongly influence experimental measurements for a variety of specific target experiments.
After almost 400 pages of speculation and descriptions of experiments and very little math, we are told:
Under some conditions, it is indeed possible to attach an aspect of human consciousness, a specific intention, to a simple electrical device and have that device, when activated, robustly influence an experiment conducted in its vicinity in complete accord with the attached intention. Thus, if they do it right, humans can influence their environment via specific, sustained intentions. […] Some new field appears to be involved in the information passage that occurs between conditioned locales that are widely separated from each other in physical space. Even with transmitters and receivers located inside electrically grounded Faraday cages, highly correlated patterns of information appeared in the remotely located locales. […] Although we don't fully understand them, we now have some new tools with which to probe the deeper structures of the universe and a new adventure is underway for humanity.
It is important to note that the "intenders" of the experiments were long-time practitioners of Siddha Yoga and could thus be considered metaphysically "in tune" to some considerable extent. The question is: What did they accomplish? Based on the descriptions, it sounds pretty earth-shaking, right?
Well, as noted, after almost 400 pages we find that the most significant result seems to have been changing the pH of a small sample of water.

What the Bleep Do We Know! - William Tiller
William Tiller presents himself as:
William Tiller, Ph.D.
Professor Emeritus of Material Science and Engineering
Stanford University
Author of 250 scientific publications and several books, including Conscious Acts of Creation and Human Transformation
He also explains:
TILLER: So, I told myself well, if I give up being Department Chairman and if I give up all my professional committees, if I gave up all my government committees, I would have a block of time that I could put to work. Of course, I'd give up al my power positions but you have to give up something. I had to keep my day job because my family needed to be fed.
In the movie he is telling us that:
TILLER: Between all the atoms and molecules, all the space within them, the particles take up an insignificant amount of the volume of an atom, the fundamental particles. The rest of it is vacuum.
This is not exactly true. A physicist should know it better. The rest is not just "vacuum". The rest is occupied by electric and magnetic fields, other gluon fields and by gravitational fields. It is these fields that bind matter, the atoms and molecules together.
After a while the main star of this movie, Ramtha, makes a comment:
RAMTHA: Is this the observer, which is so intricate [sic, probably means integral] to understanding the wacky weird world of quantum particles and how they react? Is this, then the observer?
To which Tiller replies:
TILLER: In my modeling, the observer is the spirit inside the four-layered bio bodysuit. And so, it's like the ghost in the machine. It is the consciousness that's driving the vehicle and it is observing the surround. The four layers of the bio bodysuit have all kinds of sensory systems to pick up signatures from the surround.
We are not being told in which "modeling" the observer is the spirit inside the four-layered bio bodysuit. Is it in the book "Conscious Acts of Creation and Human Transformation"? We will deal with the content of this book later on.
TILLER: Most people don't affect reality in a consistent substantial way because they don't believe they can. They write an intention and they erase it because they think that's silly, you know - I can't do that. And then they write it again and they erase it…it really comes down to the fact that they believe that they can't do it.
Most people affect reality. Dead people affect is a little. People that are alive eat and talk and have children etc. All that affects reality. Tiller may have something else in mind when he talks about affecting reality, but what can it be?
TILLER: When I was younger, I had lots of ideas about what God was and now I realize that I'm not conscious enough to truly understand what that concept means.
Perhaps to understand what the concept means one needs knowledge rather than "being conscious enough?" We can easily imagine a very conscious being, but with a zero knowledge. This being will not understand quantum field theory, and will not understand what God is. So, perhaps Tiller not only is not conscious enough, but also does not have enough knowledge?
TILLER: OK, guys, it's time for a course correction in the trajectory along the path of our adventure and that course correction is the movement towards a new paradigm, just an expansion of the old. Just as the universe is larger than we thought it was in our modeling and it's always larger than we think it is
Here we agree. But only in part. It is always time for a course correction in the trajectory - whenever there are new data that call for such a correction. And the new data come every day.
TILLER: God is a superposition of all the spirit from all things.
Is God a superposition of all spirits? Or is He a Pure State? Of course a pure state can be a superposition of all spirits. And any spirit can be a superposition of all gods!
TILLER: Your consciousness influences others around you, it influences material properties, it influences your future; you are co-creating your future.
Sure we are. A falling stone also creates its own future! It's gonna fall even lower if nothings stays in its way!
TILLER: I am much more than I think I am. I can be much more, even than that. I can influence my environment, people, I can influence space, itself. I can influence the future. I am responsible for all those things. I and the surround are not separate. They're part of one. I'm connected to it all. I'm not alone.
A rock could say as much! Except of being responsible for all those things. It sounds like Tiller tells us that he is responsible for the terrible state of the world today and for bombing children in Iraq? How is he responsible and to what extent? Is it because of his "government committees" and "power positions" that he was holding before?
TILLER: It is my belief that our purpose here is to develop our gifts of intentionality and to learn how to be effective creators.
All of us, one day will reach the level of avatars who we have read about in history, the Buddhas, the Jesus.
All of us? Are you sure Dr Tiller? What about those who do not want or do not care about being Buddhas and Jesus? What about those whore are happy because the media are writing about them as serial killers and psychopaths? What about Hitlers? What about Bushes?
As for the book "Conscious Acts of Creation and Human Transformation" - I will discuss it in the next blog.

Yoga of Time Travel: How the Mind Can Defeat Time
In "Yoga of Time Travel: How the Mind Can Defeat Time" Fred Alan Wolf writes about Cramer's transactional interpretation of quantum mechanics:
Thus the conjugate possibility-wave travels in the opposite spatial direction as it goes back through time, eventually reaching the original possibility-wave's origin…at every point along its way, it meets up with the original wave coming forward in time. The two then combine in space…the conjugate wave is said to "modulate" the original wave [similar to the way TV signals modulate or piggyback on the carrier frequency in TV transmissions]…I guess Wolf did not really read Cramer's paper critically. Wolf is accepting what Cramer is saying without any attempt of analyzing whether it makes sense or not. A detailed analysis of Cramer's idea is available on my other blog: Open System for Geniuses.
[Frequency modulation] is nothing more than the product of two waves multiplied together. Since the waves are almost identical in form, this multiplication is, in effect, squaring. In order for any event to occur, both quantum waves must be simultaneously present, one modulating the other. As Cramer explains it, when the future-generated conjugate propagates back through time to [meet] the origin of the quantum wave itself…the two waves multiply [in space and time] and the result is the creation of the probability-curve for the event occurring in space and time.
Cramer calls the original wave an "offer" wave, the conjugate wave an "echo" wave, and the multiplication of the two a "transaction"…an offer wave is sent to a receiver. The receiver accepts the offer and sends confirmation back along the same line…
Every observation is both the start of a wave propagating toward the future in search of a receiver-event and itself the receiver of a wave that propagated towards it from some past event…every observation - every act of conscious awareness - sends out both a wave toward the future and a wave toward the past…
Which future event sends back the echo wave? Cramer believes that only one future does this - the one producing the echo that happens to have the best chance of forming a successful transaction with the present.
Here it is enough to say that Cramer is making an elementary error of assuming that quantum mechanics is about waves travelling in a physical space, rather than about "state vectors" and "density matrices" in a Hilbert space - see for instance in "Density State" in Wikipedia.
In this more general framework, the one used by physicists all over the world and explained in hundreds of textbooks, Carmer's idea simply makes no sense at all. Yet it has a prominent place on Remote Viewing web page. One could think that after so many years (the first paper on transcational analysis was published in 1986) Cramer has learned about quantum mechanics in Hilbert space. But no, he is repeating the same elementary error in his new presentation.
There is no "complex conjugation" operation in a Hilbert space - contrary to what Cramer suggest. Untiunitary time reversal operation may exist - but has nothing to do whatsoever with the scalar product that is being used for calculating "probabilities" (except that it is "anti-unitary", like many other operators). But physics professor do not like to ctriticise other physics professors. Why? Because these other professors could reciprocate, and who is without any sin? To discharge their energy is is always better to act anonymously as referees in peer-reviewed journals, rejecting papers written by criticis. It is so much easier to jump on Igor and Grichka B! Igor and Grichka will not reciprocate! They have other things to do....

What the Bleep Do We Know! - John Hagelin
After commenting upon the message from Fred Alan Wolf, it is time to analyze what another physicist, John Hagelin has to say:
Have you ever thought about what thoughts are made of?
Good question! And I would answer him with: "And have have YOU thought? And what is your answer?"
Every age, every generation has its built-in assumptions; that the world is flat, that the world is round, etc. There are hundreds of hidden assumptions, things that we take for granted that may or may not be true. Of course, in the vast majority of cases historically, these things aren't true. So presumably, if history is any guide, much of what we take from granted about the world simply isn't true. But we're locked into these precepts without even knowing it, often times. That's a paradigm.
Here we agree. There are hundreds of hidden assumptions, indeed.
We're living in a world where all we see is the tip of the iceberg, the classical tip of an immense quantum mechanical iceberg.
But wait! Isn't quantum mechanics a hidden assumption by itself? Other physicists participating in the movie - Fread Alan Wolf, David Albert- think that there is something unfinished in quantum theory. And, maybe, quantum mechanics is even completely, fundamentally wrong - as Einstein believed. Therefore, why should quantum mechanics be different?
In Washington DC, the so-called murder capital of the world, there was a big experiment in the Summer of 1993, where 4000 volunteers came from 100 countries to collectively meditate for long periods of time throughout the day. It was predicted in advance that with such a sized group, you'd have a 25% drop in violent crime, as defined by the FBI, in Washington that summer. Well, the Chief of Police went on television, saying "Look, it's gonna take two feet of snow to reduce crime by 25% in Washington this summer." But by the end, the police department became a collaborator and author of this study because the results, in fact showed a 25% drop in violent crime in Washington DC, which we could predict on the basis of 48 previous studies that had already been done, on a smaller scale.

Physicist John Hagelin promised to reduce violent crime by having one thousand TM experts meditate coherently (WN 25 Jun 93). Oops! Preliminary results suggest they got the polarity wrong; homicide hit a record high level. But, at a press conference yesterday, Hagelin offered a lesson in data analysis: although murder is up from a year ago, there has been a decrease of 2.3% in "brutal crime." A clean shot between the eyes maybe. Could the drop in brutal crime be due to the increase in D.C. police surveillance and a new summer jobs program? Those programs, Professor Hagelin explained, have been more than offset by the heat wave--so the field must be working. Patched through to the press conference via satellite link from Holland, Zen master Maharishi Yogi, the intellectual force behind the experiment, explained the success of the experiment: "No one wants to be shot--it's painful." Amen.
Friday, 7 Oct 94, 1994 IG NOBEL PRIZE WINNERS ARE HONORED, IN A FASHION, AT MIT!
The Physics prize went to the Japanese Meteorological Agency for its seven-year study of a possible link between catfish wiggling their tails and earthquakes. The Peace prize went to physicist John Hagelin for his experiment to reduce crime in Washington, DC by the coherent meditation of 4,000 TM experts (WN 25 Jun 93). By coincidence, Hagelin was holding a press conference to announce his final results. It was a data analysis clinic; violent crime, he proudly declared, decreased 18%! Relative to what? To the predictions of "time-series analysis" involving variables such as temperature and the economy. So although the weekly murder count hit the highest level ever recorded, it was less than predicted.
Of course TM's fans protest.... yet they did not manage to stop or even to slow down the invasion of Iraq and mass murder of civilians by the USA which one would think might be a worthy project .... Back to Hagelin in the movie:
There really are numerous worlds in which we live. The macroscopic world, which we see, there's a world of our cells, a world of our atoms, a world of our nuclei. The deepest level of truth uncovered by science and by philosophy is the fundamental truth of unity. At the deepest sub-nuclear level of our reality, you and I are literally one. That's all? And how does it happen that these worlds happen to have "their own mathematics"? From where they are getting this math? Which store is selling it? Now, if all is one, then all numbers are "one number," right? Which number? 1 or 666?

After my Ph.D. from Harvard, I went to CERN, the European lab for particle research and then joined faculty at Stanford and my work there has been the development of unified quantum field theory. I have about 100 publications in this area but perhaps I am best known for the Super-Symmetric Flipped SU(5) Grand Unified Field Theory.
Let's see what others have to say about it:

Everything, in this case, may even include human consciousness. "
Today string theory is more and more being considered as a "fashion from the past season". The season was long, indeed, there are no good alternatives to proudly wear around, but to believe SU(5) has anything to do with "consciousness" is a little bit extravagant ....

He quotes the article "Bush administration eliminating 19-year-old international terrorism report" with the following comment: "You can't deny the beauty of the strategy. If you stop thinking about terrorism, there won't be any terrorism! Why didn't we try this sooner?". He misses the point that it is the Bush administration itself that created the wave of the terrorism, and that they did it consciously, and on purpose. If you read alternative news (even The Guardian can be considered as such) rather than the mainstream media - then there is no doubt.

Claims against the Vatican Bank by people who suffered at the hands of a Nazi puppet regime in the Croatia-Ukranian area of Eastern Europe should be heard, the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Monday in San Francisco.
The ruling came in a split decision by a three-judge panel of the full court.
Supreme Court decisions strictly limit the role of federal courts in international affairs, but the appellate court says a California district court erred in tossing the lawsuit by Holocaust survivors against the Vatican Bank and the Order of Friars Minor.
"In the landscape before us, this lawsuit is the only game in town with respect to claimed looting and profiteering by the Vatican Bank," says the majority opinion, written by Circuit Judge Margaret McKeown. "No ongoing government negotiations, agreements, or settlements are on the horizon. The outside chance that the Executive Branch will issue a statement in the future that has the "potentiality of embarrassment" when viewed against our decision today does not justify foreclosing the Holocaust Survivors' claims, especially when '[t]he age and health of many of the class members also presses for a prompt resolution.'"
In its decision, the appeals court allowed only claims for conversion, unjust enrichment, restitution, and an accounting of what happened to the property, including perhaps tens of millions of dollars in gold, which the Nazis took from their victims. It tossed claims related to human rights violations, saying it was precluded to entering those areas because of the separation of powers in U.S. government.
The suit does not name the Vatican itself as a defendant but rather focuses on a closely related entity, the Vatican Bank, the court says, adding, "The exact relationship between the Vatican and the Vatican Bank is less than clear at this stage of the proceedings."
The Vatican Bank has its principal place of business in Vatican City and is headed by a bishop, but it conducts transactions worldwide including "for-profit merchant banking transactions in the United States, California, and elsewhere."
"The actual dealings of the bank, however, are murky," the court says. "Indeed, the Vatican Bank's holdings and its specific transactions are opaque."
The bank was named because, according to the original lawsuit, when the Nazi regime collapsed at the end of World War Two, all or a portion of the treasury of its puppet government in Eastern Europe "was transferred to cooperative Roman Catholic clergyman [sic] and Franciscans for transport to Rome" where the funds eventually "found their way into the hands of the Vatican Bank, among other recipients."

"What-the-bleep-do-we-know" - Fred Alan Wolf
I've found the transcript of "What-the-bleep-do-we-know". Here is what Fred Alan Wolf is telling us in the movie, with my comments:
FAW: What I thought was unreal now, for me seems in some ways to be more real than what I think to be real, which seems now more to be unreal.Nothing to be said about that. We note that there is twice "I" and once "me". The word "real" appears twice and the word "unreal" also twice, similarly as the word "seems" :-)
FAW: Asking yourself these deeper questions opens up new ways of being in the world. It brings in a breath of fresh air. It makes life more joyful. The real trick to life is not to be in the know – but be in the mystery.Perhaps the real trick is to search for knowledge rather than for a "mystery?" We can't be in the know, but we can choose knowledge rather than ignorance on our destiny path. I think FAW missed something important in his statement above.
FAW: There is no “out there” out there, independent of what's going on in here.Independent? I which sense? In a causal sense? In relativistic quantum field theory (RQFT) spacelike regions are considered to be causally independent. And there is nothing philosophically wrong with RQFT. Except that it leads to mathematical infinities.
FAW: First of all, let's talk about the subatomic world and then we'll talk about what it's telling us about reality. The first thing I want to tell you about the subatomic world is that it's totally a fantasy created by mad physicists who are trying to figure out what the heck is goin' on when they do these little experiments.I don't think FAW really believes what he has just said. The Subatomic world is not more of a fantasy than any other "world" that we may "have in mind". It is true that it needs a different description than the macroscopic world, but that's all. That different levels of reality need different description should not be a surprise for a physicist.
FAW: By little experiments I mean big energy in little spaces in little pieces of time. It gets pretty nutty at that realm of things and so subatomic physics was invented to try to figure that all out. We need a new science down there, it's called quantum physics and it is subject to a whole range of debatable hypotheses, thoughts, feelings, intuitions as to what the heck is really going on.First of all it needs physicists who can see all the nonsense of it. As John Bell puts it in his "Against Measurement":
J. B.: It would seem that the theory is exclusively concerned about "results of measurement" and has nothing to say about anything else. What exactly qualifies some physical systems to play the role of "measurer"? Was the wave function of the world waiting to jump for billions of years until a single-celled living creature appeared? Or did it have to wait a little longer, for some better qualified system… with a Ph.D.? If the theory is to apply to anything but highly idealized laboratory operations, are we not obliged to admit that more or less “measurement-like” processes are going on all the time, more or less everywhere? Do we have jumping all the time?Back to FAW:
FAW: What seems to happen is that particles appear and disappear all the time so that where do they go when they're not here? Now, that question is tricky. I'm going to give you two answers. Answer number one: they go into an alternative universe, where the people in that universe are asking themselves the same question about those particles when they come into our universe. They say, “Where do they go?!”This sounds rather silly. So, let's skip it.
FAW: What makes up things are not more things. What makes up things are ideas, concepts, information.Now, that's getting more interesting. But do we know more about information than we know about "things?" I doubt it.
FAW: When ya ain't lookin', it's like a wave, when ya are lookin' it's like a particle.The above is simply wrong. You can be looking and you can be seeing waves. Whether you see waves or particles depends on how you look, not whether you look or not. And, in fact, it does not depend on the "look". It depends on what John Bell calls “measurement-like” processes.
FAW: We know what an observer does from the point of view of quantum physics but we don't know who or what the observer actually is. It doesn't mean we haven't tried to find an answer. We've looked. We've gone inside of your head. We've gone [over every] inch of every orifice you have to find something called an observer and there's nobody home. There's nobody in the brain. There's nobody in the cortical regions of the brain, there's nobody in the sub-cortical regions of the brain, the limbic regions of the brain – there's nobody there called an observer. And yet, we all have this experience of being something called an observer observing the world out there.
I fact we do NOT know what an observer does from the point of view of quantum physics. Textbooks do not define an "observer", they do not define "measurement"; neither is taken into account by quantum dynamics. That is exactly what was making John Bell so angry. The first sentence of the abstract of his "Against Measurement" reads: It is argued that the word "measurement" be banned in serious discussions of quantum mechanics.
FAW: This leads naturally to wonder, are people affecting the reality that they see? You betcha we are. Every single one of us affects the reality that we see - even if we try to hide from that and play the victim - we are all doin' it!
That statement carries no useful information at all. I wonder why the movie producer decided to keep it.
FAW: I have no idea what God is, yet I have an experience of "God Is", there is something very real about this presence called God, although I have no idea how to define God, to see God as a person or a thing - I can't seem to do it. It's kind of like asking a human being what God is is similar to asking a fish to explain the water in which the fish swims.
Not much better. Statements with some content are to be expected from a physicist. Perhaps it is not FAW who is to be blamed for it. Perhaps it is the movie producer.
FAW: I presume that you're asking me how scientists can sound this wacko because I must be sounding wacko. It's an interesting question. If you study science long enough and seriously enough and deeply enough, if you don't come out feeling wacko about it, you haven't understood a thing.
Again FAW is missing the point, and he is missing the opportunity to communicate something intelligible to the audience. You do not have to be a scientist to sound wacko. Priests sound wacko, politicians sound wacko, and pranks sound wacko. We do not need more noise than what is already being produced by the media. The movie could have encouraged us to seek for more knowledge, to point at the spontaneously created nonsense around us, to add some light, to highlight the directions of future research that can make a difference for the fate of humanity. Instead of this, the physicist Fred Alan Wolf is telling us that the main thing is not to "know" but to "feel mystery" and to "sound wacko."
But, again, perhaps it was only the fault of the movie producer, not of FAW. After all the main figure in the movie seems to be "Master Teacher - Ramtha School of Enlightenment" :-)

From Jack Sarfatti to Fred Alan Wolf
I decided to watch the movie "What-the-bleep-do-we-know" and I started to analyze the part of this movie that deals with quantum physics on my other blog. Here I will be posting stuff that is less technical. To summarize my impressions: the movie came out better than I expected. But that mainly because of its content related to the need of a more conscious life, to understanding the nature and the role of our emotions, not because of the part related to the quantum physics. That part came out pretty flat.
